Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about SMA and our services.
What is the first step after an SMA diagnosis?▾
The first step is to connect with a paediatric neurologist who specialises in neuromuscular diseases. Contact us and we will help facilitate a referral within 24–48 hours. Simultaneously, ensure the child's breathing and feeding are being monitored.
Is treatment for SMA available in India?▾
Yes, several treatments are available in India including Nusinersen (Spinraza) via intrathecal injection and Risdiplam (Evrysdi) as an oral medication. Onasemnogene (Zolgensma) gene therapy is also accessible through compassionate use and specialised centres. We can help connect you to the right treatment pathway.
Can SMA be detected before birth or at birth?▾
Yes. Prenatal genetic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) can detect SMA if there is a family history. Newborn screening is now available at select hospitals in India and can detect SMA before symptoms appear, enabling pre-symptomatic treatment with significantly better outcomes.
